The way I see it, run of the mill metal is not much different from shingles, because it is thin, and gets scratched putting it on, and the O-rings on the screws deteriorate. Standing seam is way ahead of regular metal though, because there are no exposed screws. I have two friends who have put it on out buildings. One is an engineer who analyses everything to infinity. The other is a tightwad who pinches a penny 'till it bends, but won fifty two million in mega-bucks so he can afford the best of everything. The multi-millionaire friend told me how they use a self propelled electric crimper that goes from bottom to top squeezing each standing seam together. It is significantly heavier than regular metal roofing too.
