They are always on the watch, I had a friendly non trouble maker under the front porch for 8 years, he was something else, but even while feeding him, he was always scanning around, he could see the neighbors dog 150+ yards away. The funny thing about it, in all those years I never had trouble with any woodchucks at all, even him. In the beginning, the upper garden was not even fenced, no chuck's, rabbits and no deer browsing etc. Must be the population increased quite a bit, soon as its planted, if the fence does not go up, it will get hit immediately.
When I see one here, I can open the back door slowly and rest up, or leave a screen out of a window, keep the track lubed with silcone to keep it quiet, but you can't be making any noise or have been outside for awhile, elusive they are !
