Well I hope you did not ruin your stator by grounding the out put wires. Your stator puts out AC voltage that is checked across the two wires. It should be between 20-30 volts AC. Then the voltage regulator/rectifier changes it into DC voltage. The regulator basically uses diodes to change the AC to DC current. So the DC voltage is half the AC voltage.
The voltage regulator usually has three wires going to it. One is power or battery voltage. The other two are the stator wires. The most common failure is the power wire not having a good circuit to the battery. Many times it is a ignition switch or corroded terminals on the back of the switch. Also the voltage regulator needs to be grounded well. Usually the mounting bolts do this.
