: I just bought a used brush hog and want to sharpen the blades. Right now they look very blunt and not very sharp. Is it normal practice to have the blade cut almost at a right angle to the side of the blade and not pointed like a knife blade? Duane, when ours used to get really bad we removed them and let the blacksmith heat and beat them back into shape and sharp-maybe a little grinding at the end. You've found that everybody has an opinion on this too. Mine is that sharp blades are better. Not a razor sharp thin edge that quickly goes away, but sharp enough that it wouldn't be called blunt. Sharp blades give grass a clean cut on the stem and the cutter is easier to pull and easier on itself. It is true if you're cutting corn stalks or something similar you might not see much difference between blunt and sharp. I still like them sharp. Have a good day. John
