Well, what I know is this- I've worked on lots and lots of gunked up engines. Usually it's a combo of old gas, water, rust, varnish and deteriorating fuel lines blocking up the passages in the carb. These are small engines or older ones, not injected. I've tried the various snake oils and most work to one degree or another. ATF, Berrymans and Sea Foam work best of what I've tried so far, in that order. With ATF I'm told it's the solvents and detergents and that makes sense to me. There are some types of gunk NOTHING will touch short of precision drilling of the passages.
As far as sticking valves, ATF comes out on top again. Back when I could get ATF for 88 cents a quart on sale I used a LOT of it. These days I cut it with diesel and try and stretch it.
