Yep, the way I understand it they are required buy law to have the title for the majority of vehicles that come in. In lieu of a title they have the legal paperwork from the shop, etc that has the lein on the vehicle.
That said the largest place outfit is a multi-billion dollar company with holdings worldwide, and they have quite a setup going on.
On the automotive side they have a rack that they can set two vehicles on to drain, clean out, etc. First all fluids are drained into large tanks and then sold, the personal belongings are removed and thrown into two big dumpsters, the tires, both good and bad, have buyers that take them. The vehicle is then taken to the 'do-it-yourself' yard where the public gets a shot at them for parts for x number of days. Once that time frame is past the remains get taken back to the shop, the engine is ripped out and certain parts are stripped off of it, the electrical system is ripped out, and ultimately the remains are crushed. The way I understand it they shoot for something like 30 to 40 vehicles a day in and out. With the fluids being sold, the wiring harnesses being baled and sold for scrap, the tires being sold, various parts being sold off to the public, and the the remains being crushed and sold, etc, etc, they make a pretty good lick off of each vehicle.
