I bought an aftermarket water pump for our Massey 35 with Continental Z134 engine. It is just the impeller and fan shaft and a flat plate that bolts to the water pump housing that is still on the tractor. The pump spins freely when I put the flange in a vise, or when I hold it in my hand. When I bolt the pump on the tractor it turns, but I can hear and feel something dragging for about 1/4 of every revolution. I thought the impeller must be dragging somewhere on the housing so I filed down the surface all of the way around the edge and the face of the impeller until the machining marks were gone and it is still just the same. The other issue is that the fan shaft is running as much as .1" out of true, and I am wondering how much of a problem that will be. I do have a service manual and owners manual for the tractor but they do not seem to address the problem. I am wondering what could be causing the pump to drag internally, and I can't seem to think of anything that makes sense. Any advice will be muuch appreciated. Zach

In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
