John the problem is the starter is up under the tractor. You can't move it back like you think because it is tipped up against the bottom of the engine. The fun part is the starter solenoid is on the top of the starter. So you have to hold the starter up to where it is about in place and then put the cable on. This is with the nose up in the housing and the brush end hanging down. Then after you put the cable on the top you push the starter into place. It is real fun work by yourself.
Next time you are around a JD 2 cylinder look at where the starter is located. There are some of the early electric start tractors that the starter is on top. But then they put it down under the flywheel on the later ones. You can tell them because there is a rod with a pedal on the top sticking up through the flywheel cover.
