thanks Showcrop & Royse I guess I just talked myself into there being a switch because I ran up on an article about some one repairing a "switch" in a 1920 tractor (this switch was used to ground the solenoid and WAS actually a switch. Also I have seen references to a "safety interlock switch" on the gear shift.
I think something is failing because I am having increasing trouble getting the shift into a neutral position where the starter pushbutton will function. Maybe I should just open the thing up and try to determine how the grounding is supposed to be accomplished. I'm just a notch above a screwdriver mechanic (with a pretty good knowledge of electric things, so I don't' know a lot about tractors. Sorry the picture didn't come through; it was a scan of a page from a parts book that I got from a Ford dealer 40 years ago. Maybe that's why it didn't show a switch; does have a part noted as #7229 and listed as "LOCK-INTERLOCK, GEAR SHIFT". I'll try sending it again; if it comes through, drag a cop to the desktop and open with Windows Photo Viewer, which will let you enlarge areas of the picture
