I be in that age category as well I have not been associated with that engine. I would use carb spray and a hand lens to carefully look at the ""new"" shaft. I would also look at the way the engine front cover is assembled to assure the location of the distributor in relation to the cam gear. My guess is that the small gear presses on with a key way, and that the cam gear is splined to the shaft. Posting a picture might be good if no satisfaction. Having a very clean original cam and gears and looking how it is assembled would be my way. I have a full machine shop and foundry to play in, so It would be my suggestion to take it to a machinist.
