I make hay mainly for horses (my own and sell some). I want dry hay, because I don't want any mold inside the bales.
Over time you will develop a sense of the hay from feeling it before you bale it. But occasionsly it will fool you, and some spots in a field ( under trees) will be wetter than others.
Once you learn what a good dry bale feels like when it comes out of your baler, you will have a good gauge to tell if the hay is too wet. Water is heavy, 8lb per gallon and therefore wet bales are heavier. Your guys stacking on the wagon will be yelling for you to stop as they stagger under a bunch of bales that are 20lb. heavier than normal.
Even so, I leave my hay stacked on the wagon under a shed roof for a few days before I put it in the barn stack.
