We have about 170 windmills in this area. This summer many days have been calm, those days the windmills produced very little. The windmills have to be backed up with conventional generation which entails maintaining two systems. Not very efficient. And the windmills were/are highly subsidized, would never have been put up otherwise. Not known is their useful lifespan. There are about 15,000 abandoned windmills in this country (google it).
