On any e-mails, I first look at the left column to see the sender's e-mail address. If it looks questionable, I immediately delete it without opening. I have also been asking responders to include their city/town/state location and phone number and best time to call them as I am out a lot. Then I do a reverse look up to see if phone area code matches their location. So far, it has cut down on unwanted trash.
My father-in-law would always open every e-mail because it might be someone very important that wants to talk with him. We cleaned out his e-mail files and cleaned viruses on his computer. In the next 3 or 4 hours, he would open another 250 to 400 junk mails and undo all the work we did.
