So, here we are not knowing what tractor or distributor that you have and not knowing which part number of perhaps a half dozen + Pertronix (maybe even Genesee) and yet, I'll go out on a limb & say, yes red & black to the coil (assuming a 'true' 12v coil). Other wise you likely need a resistor in there. If running, then why mess with success?
