: I have a 1973 12hp Wheelhorse with a Kohler engine that just broke a rod. After getting the engine apart, I found the crank in good shape but it chipped two chunks out of the bottom of the bore. The chunks that broke out are about 5/8" up the bore and about 1" along the circumfrence. My question is how much bore damage will this engine (K301 Series) tolerate before I have to replace the block? What kinds of salvage methods are there to keep from having to replace the block? What kind of experiences have people had with sort of thing? : Here's hoping I don't have to put the old horse down...... A customer once brought me a Kohler like this, since I had to be able to guarantee it I had the block bored and sleeved (much, much cheaper than a new block) but if I were doing it for myself I would probably have ground the edges smooth so it wouldn't scrape or gouge the piston, carefully fit a new rod and go. Be sure the crank journal is smooth and clean. Sometimes rod material will bond to it. Also don't try to save a few pennies on oil, buy the best for this engine. Cheap oil can be the one of the most expensive products you can buy. Good luck. :-)
