D17 ceased production in 1967 with the last Series IV. Series II was 1960-1962. Serial numbers 32001-41540. Serial numbers on D17 are found on the left side of the torque tube (clutch housing) right behind where the engine bolts in. It starts with D17, then the number.
For parts ID, you need a parts book, but first, get the OPERATOR manual. It IDs all the controls, features, etc, and tells you about operating the tractor. Fuel, oils, where to drain and fill, etc. Most basic manual of any tractor is the OP manual. When you get into fixing, you want the SERVICE, and maybe PARTS manuals.
