I went through a small grade school in the 1960's. We carried a schoolbag and homework home from the first grade on. I remember dreading homework in the 3rd grade on (geography language and multiplication), and later on helping my younger brother with his homework. Mom or dad would check that the homework was done before the TV could be turned on.
Dad had an eighth grade education that ended in 1941. In 1962 he could not help me with my first grade arithmatic, he could not understand how binary numbers could be useful for anything (computers).
See that your kids do their homework and try to coach them whenever you can, or they may still be living at home fourty years from now.
