That joint is where the entire assembly comes apart. The ring and pinion is on that front half. You have to remove both final drives to get the transmission/differential section off of the rear end housing. The drive axles of the final drives stick into the differential.
This is not like a truck/car transmission where the two sections are separate with a splined coupler between them.
The transmission and differential are all in one housing.
