I think a rule of thumb is 10 minutes homework per grade. So a sixth grader would have an hours worth of homework and a senior would have 2 hours per night. Any more than that and the teacher isn't grading it anyway.
I never had a study hall in HS until I was a senior when the school dropped 3 courses I was signed up for because of too few students enrolled. An hour of homework per class per night would not have happened, 6 academic classes plus band. Get out of school at 3:15, home around 4:30, bed by 11:00. I know our school was poor (financially) and wasn't the greatest academically but I think our standards were higher than most schools today.
