We have to sit down and do the homework with our kids every night. The math is mind boggling because the way they're told to do it simply doesn't work most of the time. They are actually instructed to count on their fingers! Both of our younger set are in 5th grade and both are special needs. (The wonders of adoptive parenting!) They will do this year in public school, 6th grade int he local Catholic school and then will be home schooled. There is no way I'm putting these 2 in middle and high school. I realize this is off the subject of homework, but high school is a meat grinder and the administration is incapable of fixing the problems. We saw what happened with our older 2 and no amount of parenting can have you there in school watching over their shoulder. I swear, it seemed like some of the teachers encouraged the kids to make poor choices! Of course, when the teachers see 2 parents, actually married to one another and living in the same household in a monogamous relationship with no drug or alcohol abuse or prison record, show up to a conference and are surprised to the point of commenting about it...well, that says a lot about our society.
We have several neighbors that home school. In each case they tell me the actual schooling takes anywhere from an hour to 3 hours a day if you only do 5 days a week and summers off. Those who do school year round tell me it's about an hour a day or less depending on where the kid is headed ad what interests they have. 2 of these home schooled kids are electrical engineers, another families HS kids all went to college, none have any drug/alcohol/criminal issues as is so common with public school kids. They are all polite and respectful kids.
And for those that wonder, my wife is a teacher and several of the home school families have educator parents. It seems there are a lot of people feeling the same as we do.
