15-45 minutes of homework at those grade levels isn't far from what I had in grade school back in the 60's. My parents never did the work for me. They made sure I did the work and helped me when I needed help.
With so much of public education being political indoctrination these days it's not a bad thing at all that you're seeing what they're being taught. It's a good thing for parents to be involved in their kid's education. I do think the schools are wanting the parents to be involved for good and bad reasons. The good reasons should be obvious. The bad reasons being they want to indoctrinate the parents too.
If more parents really paid attention to what their children were being taught, there would be more children enrolled in private schools.
My kids were born in the early 1980's. Both had at least as much home work as you mentioned. Both had time to be kids and still get their home work done. I do think the amount of home work they had in high school was too much. 3 hours of home work is too much.
If the kid's home work requires 2 hours of your time perhaps you and your wife could split the time and each spend an hour helping your kids. Hopefully you don't think investing an hour of your time per day in your kids is excessive.
