Im not Royse but until he gets here, The gennys FLD post wires EITHER to the FLD terminal on a Voltage Regulator (if it has one???) or the FLD wire connection on a Low/High light switch on systems that dont use a VR but instead a cutout relay and the light switch to regulate charge rate. If the gennys FLD is constantly grounded she can over charge, thats why either a VR or the low/high switch is used.
If a genny fails to charge but ONLY charges if its FLD is dead grounded, the problem is EITHER the VR is bad (if it has one),,,,,,,,, or the VR lacks a good frame ground (if it has a VR),,,,,,,,,,or if a light switch control system the switch isnt well grounded (that can happen easy),,,,,,or the wires missing from FLD on genny up to the switch
Below is my Troubleshooting Procedure if you need more. Royse can add to or correct this when he arrives.
If farmer Billy Bob grounded the field so she would charge, the VR (if it has one) was bad or not well groujnded or the low high switch was bad or not well grounded or the wire to it was open
