If an engine is built strong enough to stay together, rebuild after rebuild, it makes little difference. That being said - a straight in-line engine has a "ladder-frame" block design which offers the strongest block in the world when it comes to the weight-to-strength ratio.
V-engines can take up less room in length but had the disadvantage of not being able to use in-line injection pump (back in the mechanical injection days). It was the invention of the rotary- distributor injection pump that allowed V-shaped diesels to first exist. Now - with common rail, it's a moot point.
There are many V-shaped diesels that last just as long as in-lines.
