1. I don't bid on anything I can't use.
2. I know the value of anything I'm interested and only go as high as 50% of that value.

Was interested in an item a couple of years ago. Went to the auction and would up with an old school hub puller, a 6" angle grinder and the item I wanted. Was funny on the one thing. Only one other bidder. I figured I would go to $800 and I started the bidding at $50. Was only one other guy bidding on it. Both of us would bid right away without playing any mind games. When the item got to $350 the other guy hesitated. I knew at that time that I had it cause he was close to his limit. I got it for $385. When I won the bid the guy just glared at me. I was laughing pretty hard about that for a long time. I do wind up passing on far more than I buy because of my rules. Good thing I don't have lots of money.
Auctions are a social event here. I really enjoy going to them so even if I buy nothing I still have entertainment.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
