On one side, pre-exisisting dry space, be it old barns or outbuildings certainly deserve a closer look. Sometimes things are well beyond salvage, other times not, then sometimes you can open an unexpected "can of worms".
I can relate having grown up around 2 huge barns, had a 3rd at grandparents place up in the mountains, while not as user friendly, all three of these would certainly be very useful today, even if not all the space, like the hay mows were still in use. Cost to replace or build something of similar size would be considerable, all 3 are gone now, but the dry space is certainly missed.
Thats one side of it, the other is being that so many older wood structures such as barns may not be so useful due to size, configuration and or type of barn, its from a bygone era, that does not match todays needs. Old barns are wonderful structures to look at and admire, as well the age/character, materials, and old school craftmanship with associated labor to create, its great to save them, when can be done feasible etc., or repurpose, relocate to save them. tough call to make, in my case I would have liked to have been able to save at least one of ours, we could sure have used the space to store hay bought locally and draw as needed to the other place, so it would have been useful. Be great to see some photos.
