We both lease and buy. We look at the deal and make the decision to buy on how many miles we plan to drive over the period, what the trade in value is on that type of vehicle, and also what we think of the vehicle in terms of how it will fit our needs long term. If it is a new model then we will very likely lease because it could turn out to be a vehicle with many problems.
We bought one vehicle and leased one vehicle last time around because we were concerned about the size of the car and also because the terms of the lease vehicle were 2 years, 24,000 miles for $1,900 prepaid. we could not hope to better that with a purchased vehicle. We just happened to hit an opportunity where the incentives and initial cost were very low as they were trying to promote the car. After driving the car for 1-1/2 years we decided not to get another of the same kind as it is to low to the ground and hard to get in and out of. So leasing does work in some instances.
We bought a vehicle for $26,500 in 2010 and our daughter leased the same type and model vehicle for $503 per month for two years. 2-3/4 years and 10,000miles later we traded the vehicle in and got $23,000 for it. In that instance leasing the vehicle was extremely more costly to lease than to buy. However we did tie up $26,500 of our cash which we could have invested and earned who knows what in returns.
