a few observations, first, what are you going to use it for? 1/2 tons ride nice, but since the late '80's there about like a car with a bed, if you need to pull or haul you have to go at least 3/4 ton to get a truck with the frame brakes and suspension to do anything, all the big brands are about the same quality wise if taken care of theyll last at leats untill the computer problems drive you to get rid of it years later, that time will be directly tied to the skill of the local dealers mechanics and their ability to keep it fixed all brands have their specific issues and shortcomings, another option which is what i do, is pick out a older truck which has what you want, maybe even the one you currently have, and go thru it front to back it will cost more than the appraised value of the truck, but way less than a new truck depending on what you can do yourself, when done you have basicly a new truck less the upgreades of the newer ones which really arnt to important anyway, also plan to drive it from then on, i own 6 trucks and all are pre computer trucks they get bad gas millage and are down some on power, if you consider one of mine having a built 454 down on power, a new diesel will outpull it, but i know how to fix mine, the problem is they never need fixing, and i dont have any payments on any of them all also look good, at least from 20 feet away personnaly i have in mind taking a truck, from the 40's or '50's boxing the frame, [ for extended cabs, some of the big trucks had a intregal sleeper which looked like a extended cab,] and dropping a 6bt cummings, 5 speed transmission and a modern 1 ton rear axle, [ frame width wise they are about the same as a 1 ton so swapping the big cab to a 1 tom chassis isnt as hard as it would look ] then using a aluminum flatbed for the bed, it would be unique, do anything i wanted , have the road speed to run with anything out there, there would be much more building than i have here, but the end result would probably outlast me, and no computer problems,or other mysterious black boxes to deal with

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point
