You're on the right track here. I'd chase the positive cable all the way down to the starter first. If you don't find a problem, then take the cable off the starter and make sure it won't touch a ground by taping the bare terminal. Try to re-connect the battery and see if sparks again. If not, you've got an internal short in the starter. Good Luck and God Bless
