I'm no expert with this tranny but I' have had a little experience with both the locking up and fifth gear. My Dodge Cummins has this tranny. I worked for the previous owner and he had the snap ring come off of 5th gear, letting the gear come off the end of the shaft. They drove it that way for many miles without 5th. I took it apart, replaced the snap ring, put it together and it's been running fine for the last six or seven years. If I remember right the so-called 5th gear update had been installed but they put the worn, used snap ring back on the end of the shaft, and it came out of the groove.
When the previous owner first got this pickup (used) the tranny had been fresh rebuilt through Inland parts. I drove it home to the new owner's place, about 600 miles, and it suddenly wouldn't come out of reverse. I pulled the tranny out, they took it to the nearest Inland parts place and came back with a different rebuilt one. A couple of days later they took off for Texas with it, loaded down with tools, compressor, welder etc. and hooked a loaded 30' combine header trailer behind it. At Seiling OK the tranny locked up, same as yours. They had a shop pull the tranny and send it to the Inland parts place in Oklahoma City. Inland accused them of pulling a load in 5th,claiming the tranny can't take it in 5th and it will lock up. It's pulled many hard loads in 4th since then without problems. I too would like to have a 6 speed in this pickup but the 5 speed has to give up the ghost first. Jim
