It's the same polycarbonate used in consumer safety eye glass lenses. It can be "chemically welded" into shapes. Threaded holes can also be drilled and tapped into polycarbonate.
McMaster-Carr is one source for Lexan and polycarbonate. All plastic suppliers and most steel suppliers sell it too. Prices are not cheap, industrial suppliers normally have lower prices than consumer outlets.
We use a lot of Lexan at work. We're putting 1/4" Lexan in a "burst test chamber" and it satisfies “DIN 52290 part 4" rating for impact resistance. (DIN Standard is (3) 9# steel balls dropped from 12 ft)
