Type I diabetes has nothing to do with sugar, it used to be called Juvenile Diabetes. Type II diabetes used to be called Adult Onset Diabetes, it is associated with being overweight but skinny people can get it also. There is some research suggesting that Alzheimers is Type III Diabetes, more research is needed but so far it seems that Alzheimers victims brains are resistant to insulin.
I have a great nephew who is Type I, he is a toddler and is already on the pump. It is somewhat easy on him since he doesn't know any other way, his mother has all the worry about diet. A 4 year old should adapt easily, older kids who are used to eating anything it is more of a shock to them.
I have 4 nieces and nephews who are Type I, 1 great nephew who is Type I, several aunts who were type II, I am type II, and both my mother and her mother died from Alzheimers. This is a subject our family is very interested in.
