: : I'm in the home stretch of rebuilding a 1938 F14. By the time I get done, change from $5000 won't buy me lunch at Mickey-D's...A major wad of that is in the engine, what with machine work, new cylinder head, new manifold, rebuilt mag and rebuilt carb. My question is this...AM I CRAZY? I know I'll never get anything like that back out of it in the form of cash (I suspect I'd do well to sell it for half of that, if it came right down to it). Is this amount of money way out of line for rebuilding a tractor? Notice I didn't say "restoring"...the correct tires, rims, wheels and some real body work would easily add another $2000 to that. I don't regret having done it, I had (am having) a lot of fun, and I expect to enjoy putting around on the old girl for several years, but it surely is a shock to realize how much money I've put into it. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has similar thoughts. : Well, its obvious that tractor people in general are refined, right-thinking gentlefolk! I agree with all opinions expressed so far. As long as my wife (the OTHER old girl, farmer!) doesn't find out, I'm of the opinion that it's a fair bargain. The other half of the question is a bit more materialistic...Have other people out there who have rebuilt/restored similar tractors spent similar amounts of money? Or am I being taken to the cleaners? I did the math since this morning, and 70% of the budget is in the engine. My local machinist had better enjoy that vacation in the Bahamas I financed! ;-) I am in the final stages of an F-12 restoration. I must say that 90-95% of what I have spent ($2000) has been on the engine. I have a friend that works in a machine shop that did my work for almost nothing and other friends behind the parts counter that shaved their profit some to help me. So, I imagine I would have nearly as much in mine had I had to pay full price for everything. However, I have enjoyed the countless hours spent on the old girl(1935) so the price kinda gets overlooked. Kevin
