: : : I am looking at a JD 830 3cyl. its been setting up for about 3 yrs. has a cracked piston sleave anyone know what its worth or if the 830 is a good tractor? I am planing to make it funcional and keep it. Any info is app. Thanks Gregg : : Gregg: : : Unless I'm confused (which is entirely possible), the only 830 JD made is a two cylinder. It's a truly humungous rig, the biggest tractor JD made in the late 50's. If this is indeed what you are looking at, it's a lot of tractor for the average amateur mechanic to work on. The other possiblilty is that what you're really looking at is an 850 compact utility, which is indeed a three cylinder. This is a Japanese import (Yanmar) and is a heck of a tractor for the size. I've got the next model down, a 750, have had it for 10 years and no complaints. I can get you some more details on whichever one you're looking at. Let me know if you want more data. : : Paul : TOLD you it was possible I was confused. Herewith my resignation. I will, from this point, only use this board to ask questions, and make no further attempt to answer them, as I am more often wrong than right. Sorry. : Paul. Don't feel bad, Paul. I got into quite an argument one day with a new JD parts person. Gave me the wrong oil filter for a 420. He kept insisting it was correct. I kept insisting he was in need of remedial schooling. Turns out JD had come out with a 420 lawn mower, and he was giving me the filter for that. I wanted one for a REAL 420, but he never knew they had made one in the late '50s. I hate it when they reuse model numbers like that!
