Synthetics claim longer oil change intervals. Tractors need to have the oil changed at the regular intervals the factory recommends. The air filter and oil filter can't catch all of that dirt a tractor is sucking in when working in the field.
I have only one example of this so it isn't a fair comparison, but here goes.
My brother-in-law bought a new 1086 in 1978 and a few months later I bought a new 1086 too. Both tractors were used for heavy field work in season and for manure hauling and feed grinding, and wagon hauling during the off season. Both tractors have been very well cared for and maintained, plugged in before starting in the winter and NO ether.
He ran Amsoil and changed oil at their extended oil change times. I don't know how often he changed the filter. I used regular oil from the International dealer and changed oil and filter every 100 hours per the book. The viscosity was 30WT summer, 10WT winter until 15-40 came out, then 15-40 thereafter.
At 10,000 hours both of us overhauled our 1086's.
His crankshaft had to be reground, his oil pump had to be replaced for the second time and the camshaft was worn beyond serviceable specs.
The crankshaft in mine showed no wear and looked like new. I did replace the factory installed oil pump. The camshaft lobe lift was still about 30 percent away from the specs that would mean replacement.
I don't know how many hours his 10 has now. Mine has a twitch over 16000, meaning 6000 hours on the overhaul, runs great oil pressure, doesn't use oil and starts like a champ.
He did, and maybe still does run a synthetic of some sort in the hydraulics/transmission. He's replaced the TA once. I've always run Hy Tran and I've replaced 5 TA's. So?????? Both tractors have had about every gear in the tranny and rear end replaced by now.
I know this isn't a fair comparison, rather it's just an example.
I do use synthetic in my Toyota van and the Colorado. Time will tell with them. Jim

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
