D beatty, I was told by an old mechanic, you don't break in a new engine with synthetic. I have a friend that uses regular oil from dealer in her chevy. The first 3000 miles it uses no oil. In 4000 miles, down 1/2 qt. In 5000 miles it's down 1 1/2 quarts. Makes me a believer in changing oil every 3000 miles. I think the engine only holds 3.5 qts, so 1.5 qts is a lot.
I have a similar situation with my 20 hp kohler. Dealer says change it every 100 hrs. At 60 hrs. oil looks new. At 75 hrs, oil is down 1/2 way on stick and looks black. That's when I change it. It's hard for me to believe in just 15 hours my oil turns to mud, but like clock work it does.
