Here we go again.
I had a '88 5 liter Ford P/U. Even though I always fill the oil filter before installing on an oil/filter change, the lifters would rattle just before the oil pressure registered. I didn't like that. I don't remember how I started or what brand I used but I went with 100% syn and never heard another noise.
I used to change the oil in my 5 lawn mowers several times during a season using quality HD paraffin oil. Went to 10w-30 as recommended vis. full syn and change it at the end of the season, still somewhat clear.
Having learned of the benefits of syn, I bought a new tractor with a B3.3NA Cummins diesel. I called Cummins USA and asked them if I could run Rot T 5W 40 syn in it. Their reply: "After the first oil change; that is at the first 300 hour oil change interval, your engine would LOVE you to run that oil."
So here we have 2 things: 1 is that the apparently paraffin based oil did allow for wear that syn didn't and needing things to get seated on a new engine you needed some wear. Second the engine mfgr. apparently endorses full syn.
I change my oil in my current '11 p/u once per year at about 7500 miles of mostly country driving, few big loads and my tractor at the 300 hr. recommended change. No oil is added between changes for the Mobile 1 5w-30 recommended for the truck (I actually use 0-30), or the Rot 5w-40 in the tractor.
Oh, and there is an upside to ultra low sulphur diesel.......sulphuric acid. Reducing that reduces the harmful effects of long term oil changes like one would have in a tractor that sits a lot. So it's not all bad.
So there is another twist to this puzzle.
Neat thing about oils. Go to WW and look at their oils shelves. Probably more variations in that product line than any other products they sell......you know if it doesn't sell they don't stock it. Amazing what we oil users have in the way of "gotta haves" when it comes to oil....but we never talk about grease or tranny fluid, or seldom hyd fluid and all.
