I ll try to answer youe question on why cover crop,but I hope many more read this and reply too, A cover crop is good when you plow it under in the spring it adds what they sometimes call green manure to the soil ,giving many benifits to your growing plot,also helps stop errosion during the winter,There are many other benifits,I hope others on the site here add some info for you. In answer to the soil type in our area,it is known as a limestone shale,howerever,the patch down by the pines is a low area,and has some clay in it,I plant another strip of garden over by the neighbors that is much better soil,here is a picture of that earlier this spring The first shot of cold weather has hit us here ,and already I miss planting and working the garden,I dont care much for winter!

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
