Has any major work been done to the engine? Such as being disassembled? How are you checking your spark? The spark acts much differently under compression than it does out at atmospheric pressure. If you have a vacuum leak it will not suck gas thru the carb or if your cam to crank timing is incorrect it doesn't matter where your distributor rotor is pointing. Make sure both valves are closed on the cylinder you are checking and make sure your rotor is pointing to that cylinder then make sure that piston is at top dead center. Then make sure you know which way your rotor turns and time the wires on the distributor cap according to the firing order. This is what to look for if your crank and cam are timed correctly. You need 4 things to make an engine run.
1. Fuel 2. Air 3. Compression 4. Ignition (at the right time)
