Some of it depends on what you have in mind, looking for a tack driver or just critter control around the place? The Ruger Mini-14 is a great rifle, fun to shoot, lots of accessories available. The older Rugers with the thin barrels, like mine has, aren't real accurate but you can make them perform a little better with a couple add-ons, and newer models allow use of scopes. The AR platform can be very accurate and you can customize them how ever you wish. I've been thinking about picking up another .223 and am leaning towards a Savage. They make good affordable and accurate rifles. Their no-thrills rifle is the Stevens 200, but have heard rumors that may be discontinued since they introduced the Axis model.
