Read up on the Ruger Ranch/Mini-14, focus on accuracy, see if that fits what you need in a semi auto, less expensive than an AR, but I think the AR type would win for accuracy in a semi. The action in a Ruger Ranch/Mini-14 is very reliable and durable. I have one in stainless, thats hardly been used, I noticed the accuracy was not what I expected, however I've never really put any rounds through it, it was new, but early 90's, so I think its part of a serial number run known for that, it is scoped. So that era of Mini 14's it may be true, there is something to it, I'll likely not know given prices of ammo and all the restrictions, hoarding of ammo in NY going on now. It would have to be bench tested for sure. Knowing this years later, I would have opted for an AR style, given how its been developed and changed over the years. I have a lot of experience with M16 A1's, or Vietnam era ones that were at the national guard armory way back when, still think I'd take the Ruger over those in a semi, as even with meticulous care, one jam up is one you will likely never experience with a Mini 14. Things have changed so much with these, AR/Bushmaster or whoever's stamp is on the receiver of these modern ones now as there are so many manufacturers of them today. They seem to be much better and I thought the gas operating system was changed which solves problems with older ones like I recall, don't quote me but.... Last time I shot one with military peep sights, a modern AR variant I did very well, for not having fired one in 25 years or more. It performed flawlessly too.
For long range accuracy, and not needing it in a semi, I'd want something good, heavy target barrel/rifling to match etc.
In another caliber, I was impressed with what I recall being a Savage Tactical, shorter but heavy target barrel, rifling to match, it was in .308, trigger pull was nice as it was a 2 stage done very well from factory, and it was just literally a tack driver from the first time I fired it. Thats the performance I like, it was not a super expensive in just a bare rifle, this one I shot did have a scope, and one of those just might be my next deer rifle as the NY safe act mandates a change for owners of certain firearms you have to be on a list subject to all this nonsense that never existed before, like state police reviewing your permit for disqualifiers, re-certify every 5 yrs, miss any of that, you lose the rifle, when you pass away, it gets destroyed period, ok better stop here LOL !!!! Us humble firearm owners are under scrutiny for no reason.... darned politicians LOL !!!!!!
