I've kept sheep for about 20 years now.
Bear in mind that I've always had "primitive" breeds (Shetlands and Katahdins) that are about the most rugged sheep out there.
They have access to this shed which is open to the South and contains their hay feeder and mineral salt box. They spend a lot of time in there if the weather is REALLY foul. If the sun is out, they're out poking around no matter how cold it is.
They also will go lay in the barn/tractor shed which is open to the East and South. If it's really bitter, they'll use that to block the wind and move around to where they're laying in the sun as the day progresses.
They drop lambs (unassisted) anytime between January and March and I've never lost a lamb to the cold. In fact, the cold stimulates them to nurse. If they're kept TOO warm, pneumonia becomes a problem.
I have never shut them up in a closed shed or barn.
