I have had sheep for about 15 years. Mine are outside. The mature ewes have a row of brush to the north of the yard for protection and the lambs have a shed open to the south. I have wool breeds, a mix of Dorset, Suffolk, Ile de France, and Rideau and Canadian Arcot. I think the secret to keeping sheep outside is to not be cheap with the feed pail. My ewes are getting first cut wrapped bales and one pound of barley per day, and the lambs have second cut wrapped bales and 1 and 1/2 pounds barley per day. It was -35 last night and the sheep are fine. I have 170 ewes to breed, down from 280 2 years ago. There are about 375 around right now, down from 510 at weaning time.
