IMHO, by your own admission you could not solve the problem and therefore you should not have charged him until the problem was fixed unless both the farmer and you had a previous agreement that you would take a look and charge what you did. The reason experts are called in to solve problems is that they are supposed to have the training and or experience to do the analysis and then also make the repair.
