I once worked with a man some 30 years ago who told this story about Christmas during or right after the Depression Years. One Christmas as a small boy all he had to spend for his Mom’s gift was a dime. On a Saturday morning just before Christmas Day as was customary his dad carried them all to town. In the local General Store he was hurriedly trying to find that prefect gift. Excitingly going throughout the store he soon realizes that even though he had worked for and saved up that money, ten cents was not much money with which to purchase a gift, when; he notices on the counter some sealed paper grab bags. For ten cents you could take your pick of any bag and you kept the article inside. For a young boy this was exciting, for a dime you could not only play a game but you were buying a Christmas gift at the same time. Quickly he started sorting through the bags, feeling for weight and shape. Finding one with his idea of a good shape plus a soft clanging sound to it he happily proceeded to the counter with the thought that it contained a necklace and paid for the purchase. Rushing outside he tore into the bag to see what his mom’s Christmas gift would be; inside he found a rubber sink stopper, the type that had a small chain attached to it with which to pull it out of the drain. Disappointed at what was inside the grab bag and saddened that he had foolishly spent all his money on an unknown item he quietly rode home with his family. However; that day when he recounted his story and someone asked; what did you do? He replied with a big smile, well; mom got a rubber sink stopper for Christmas that year.

The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
