I remember mom using me as a height gauge for the tree that she "ordered". I must have been pretty short then, because the tree was supposed to be twice as tall as I was. We waded out thru the snow, and picked out a cedar that dad said he'd had his eye on. It just "happened" to be the right height. He sawed it off and we drug it back to the house. Mom popped popcorn and we strung that and some kind of red berries on string to decorate it. She had some tinsel (she saved it from year to year) and I thought it looked pretty slick. That's the first Christmas tree that I can remember.
Another Christmas tree that stands out in my memory - about 20 years ago, along Interstate 24 in Massac County Illinois, just east of the Johnson County line, someone would decorate a lone cedar tree that grew on the north side of the highway. They did a bang up job, complete with gift wrapped boxes underneath it. No lights, because it was in the middle of nowhere, but it was still a beautiful and surprising sight.
