These days, TVs are a commodity. There's just not much difference between brands. The purpose of the sale-priced item is to get you in the store, since they can't sell you anything until you come in. The dealer would be quite happy if you switched to a model with a higher markup, but it's safe to say they aren't losing money on the sale-priced item either.
In the case of RCA, it's a commodity brand these days and probably comes off the same lines that produce a dozen other brands. Which is not to say a particular RCA model is bad or good; it's simply no better and no worse than the rest.
When I finally relented on replacing our old TV, my wife insisted we go to Costco, "because it will be cheaper". I was looking at 50" units, but she was immediately drawn to the larger and more expensive units. Of course, if you have an 800 dollar TV next to a 900 dollar one, the $900 one will "look better". I'm convinced I could have reversed the price tags and she would have changed her mind. At any rate, we ended up buying a very nice 60" Sharp with 3D capability. It was well over a grand. "We don't need 3D!" "It's for the grandkids!" We've never used the 3D.
