I picked up a cute little Pasquali tractor, has a 20HP one-lunger Lombardini diesel. Runs good, starts good, pulls like a tank. I'm well pleased.
It does have a cold start assist that also seems to work great, but the science utterly eludes me, and my 'Satiable Curiosity has been aroused.
It consists of a small reservoir (maybe an ounce) on the cylinder head near the injector. The deal is, when you need a cold start boost, you fill that reservoir with ordinary crankcase oil.
Makes absolutely no sense to me whatever, but damned if it didn't work like a champ in 8º weather last night.
Anybody got a clue how that works?
Edited to correct name of the engine
