LAA: I KNOW of NO one that lost 80% of their 401K. Many went down 50% but NONE went down 80%. If those that went down 50% just ignored the stock market and stayed put an kept adding to their 401K are dong fine now. Those right at retirement took a hit only on the funds they removed.
A 401K is a LONG term investment. You need to look at 10-20 trends. You can put your money in CD right now for maybe 2%. Passbook savings are in the 1-2% range. So the 401K will beat them all of the time over the long term.
