Rich, did I ever say the value of a dollar is the same as it was five years ago? No, I did not. The point is, if you're comparing three different investments, you have no choice but to pick some standard against which to judge them. Guns, gold and stock indices are all conveniently priced in dollars. Yes, you can compare them using Euros, Yen, bushels of wheat, barrels of oil or opera tickets. It doesn't matter, the outcome will be the same, you'll just have to do the additional work of conversion. You could also compare them using 2009 dollars, if that makes you happy; just multiply times 0.90. It doesn't change the result that the stock market was the place to put your money over the past five years.
