All pads produce dust, some compounds more than others, some produce a different color of dust.
Carbon pads might not be the best performing pad for stopping but they are what most OEM's use. They are not as noisy, the dust is lighter colored and less likely to adhere to stuff. They dissipate heat better and not as hard on rotor wear. Not the best pad for high speed, racing or heavy towing.
Metallic pads are more aggressive, stop better and keep rotors cooler. They usually produce more dust and its darker colored and more noticeable. They are louder and will wear rotors faster.
